Self Destructing Email
November 29, 2006
Signing up for just about any now a days will get your email flooded with tons of spam. Even if some companies “claim” they don’t sell your info. Anyone who signs up for free samples, newsletters and many other internet deals and websites can find themselves trying to dig through good and bad emails.
The best idea used to be, create a ton of emails to catch the spam and have your real emails for important messages from work, family and friends. However there is an even better idea, for the short term at least.
It is called 10 Minute Mail and will allow you to create an email address that you can use to sign up for things that will either create spam or its especially good for places that want you to get a confirmation email. After the 10 minutes is up, the email address goes up in smoke. Very creative idea.
This email address will self-destruct in 10 minutes
Stop Boring E-chatter
November 19, 2006
Google rolled out a few new Gmail features this weekend including “mute,” which automatically archives messages that arrive in response to a particular conversation.
1) You get yet another annoying message in the same damn conversation that’s already been conversed to death.
2) You press the ‘m’ key. Unless a message is written *directly* to you (e.g., your name is in the TO spot), you’ll never see that message in your inbox again!
In short, the Mute feature enables you to tell Gmail: “Archive this conversation AND all future posts in it… just have ‘em skip the inbox!”
Thanks, Lifehacker. You’ve saved me from reading a thousand “me too” posts.
Stop Spam
November 19, 2006
Lifehacker tells us how to fnd out who’s spamming you.
- Instead of just entering username@gmail.com as your email, enter it as username+samplesitecom@gmail.com instead
- When Gmail sees a “+” in an email address, it uses all the characters to the left of the plus sign to know who to send it to. In this example it would still send it to username@gmail.com.
- If you search Gmail for username+samplesitecom, you will see all massages that were sent to that email address.
- To see who is responsible for sending a specific message click the Show Details link and you will see the complete address.
Unfortunately, most of my spam is unfunny forwards from acquaintances. If only there was a polite way to stop those.
