Internet Scammers Declare War in 2007

December 12, 2006

Internet scammers aren’t very happy at the moment. The reason being that most individuals are savvy enough to be careful with emails and don’t fall into scams as easily as they used to. This has created a problem for those who are looking for a fast and illegal buck. Since there targets have changed so must they. It is predicted that in 2007 scammers will change their attacks toward cell phones, instant messaging and text messaging as well as sites like myspace. These scams are already occurring but they will be much higher than they were before as the more unsavory characters look for a new avenue to take your money.

People could find their computers infected with viruses that secretly record all their keystrokes or send out millions of spam email messages.

Identity theft fraudsters will trawl through sites which allow people to leave their pictures and personal details, finding targets for “phishing” attacks — fraudulent emails aimed at tricking people into revealing credit card numbers.

“It is way too easy for the spyware guys to assemble a puzzle of who you are,” English said.

The Pole Dancing Doll

December 12, 2006

In the UK some consumers are angry at a new toy that was on display. The small pole dancing doll was labeled just for adults but that didn’t appease the angry mob. The toy has now been removed from the shelves.

MySpace Add-On

December 9, 2006

Visit trackers.arecool.net for a free MySpace counter. Unfortunately, it comes with an advertisement. This tracker works by subscribing people who view your profile to your blog. When someone is subscribed to your blog, you can find a link to and a picture of them by clicking on your “My Readers” link inside of “Manage Blog”. And then you can become famous on the internet. Or something.

Spokeo

December 5, 2006

I finally got onto a social networker before Kristin. I signed up with Spokeo, a new combination blog/RSS reader and profile network. Unlike MySpace, Spokeo seems to have users who are out of their teens. You don’t have to declare your dating status, list off your favorite movies or come up with a cutesy tagline to sign up. (not that I’m still bitter about thinly veiled dating sites, ahem, Consummating)

Since you log in with your e-mail address, you can change your username whenever you want. Right now, I’m Meg In China… which I’ll be changing to Meg In Rome and then to Unemployeed Girl In Western Mass very soon.

Spokeo is clearly a work-in-progress, with it’s share of dead links. Recently it’s also failed to recognize my password. It doesn’t bother me, though, I got my GMail account when it still had the beta disclaimer. I just missed getting an Early Adopter Livejournal account because whenever Kristin tries to get me to sign up for something, I whine and moan for a while first.
