The NextGen of PSP

November 6, 2008

NxtGen PSP
Here is a new concept for the playstation portable I hope to see this in the near future. This PSP design concept by Tai Chiem probably won’t be made anytime soon, but it really should.

This concept has a rolling OLED screen, I think we are close to perfecting that technology, but not that close. Still, it would be clever to have a screen that can roll up the PSP itself. No more tiny screen, but it needs some sort of electrical charge to hold it up. I guess it uses the same “memory cloth” technology as shown in Batman Begins.

Not only does it have the rolling and scrolling action going on, but the side speakers fold inwards, presumably to hold the screen into place when it rolled up.

This technology is too good to use on just portable video game consoles. I think that every cellular phone needs to be this wand-shaped thing that you can use to take and received calls, and then roll it out to watch videos or whatever applications you care to run.

Smartlock for your bikes.

November 6, 2008

I’m sure all of you have seen movies where special dyes are used to catch criminals who have stolen valuable items. Remember at the end of Speed when Dennis Hopper is on the subway after he thinks he has made a clean getaway with lots of money? he goes to check his lot, and gets a face ful of purple dye.

Considering there is a whole show devoted to non-existent technology used to catch criminals, I was surprised to discover that this technology actually exists. The smartlock takes this crime-fighting technology and puts it on a more commonplace item: a bike lock.

The smartlock is a bike-lock cable filled with compressed air the special liquid dye. So if someone tries to cut open the cable with file or bolt cutters, there will be sudden squirt that the criminal won’t forget.

Best of all, the dye has a distinct residue that works as an “invisible forensic property marking liquid. I’m not certain what that means, but I’m guessing the dye is not only hard to wash off, but leaves some sort of stain that is visible only under certain lighting.

The smartlock is just concept at this time, but it is one of those that should be rushed to production due to its usefulness.

Banana Gadget!

July 2, 2008

The geniuses at Mental Floss have a brand-new CD cleaning gadget — a banana! It seems a little wonky, but hey, the CD in question is already scratched up, why not give it a shot?

There are myriad ways in which these soon-to-be obsolete discs get ruined, causing us to curse and throw the things in the trash, or just catalog them back in a CD booklet hoping one day in the future some miracle chemical cure-all will be invented to unscratch ‘em.
Whelp, the future is here, only the cure-all isn’t a toxic chemical, but rather, a banana! Check out the later half of the Howcast.com video below to learn how to resurface them, or just see the list.
1. Peel the banana
2. Rub the banana on the CD in a circular motion
3. Use the underside of the peel and rub the banana in deeper
4. Wipe away the residue with a lint-free cloth, like you’d use to clean your car windows
5. Using another cloth, remove smudges with a spritz of Windex
6. Voila, she is like new!

Don’t Think, Just Shoot.

If you happen to be a lomography enthusiast, that line will be familiar. Yup, that’s the mantra of lomography.

You might wonder what lomography is. It sounded alien the first time I’ve heard of it too. But looking at the vast galleries of lomographers all over the world, got my hands itching to own a lomo camera too. I had even spent a couple of nights, sleepless, just thinking of getting my hands all over that gadget. I was indeed bitten by the lomo bug.

So what is lomography?

According to Wikipedia, “Lomography is the commercial trademark of Lomographische AG, Austria for products and services related to photography. It emphasizes casual, snapshot photography. Characteristics such as over-saturated colors, off-kilter exposure, blurring, “happy accidents,” and alternative film processing are often considered part of the “Lomographic Technique.”

There are different types of lomo cameras. The body is made of plastic. The lenses are plastic too. But there are some models which also have glass lenses. It uses varied film formats like 35mm (the ordinary ones we used in our analog cams), 110 and 120 to mention a few.

The lighthearted approach to taking pictures and candid photography are techniques encouraged for the budding lomographer. It’s a fun way to bring zest to the dailiness of life.
